America is sometimes pictured as a nation of riverboat gamblers, high rollers, and small-fry players, who frequent meccas like Las Vegas and Atlantic City, and travel to regional casinos and racetracks across the land. Lotteries and super lotteries also get plenty of play.
By world standards, we are apparently a nation of pikers when it comes to gambling. Click here for a CNBC article and accompanying slide show that depicts “the countries with the biggest losers and the boldest gamblers.” The United States did not even make the top ten.
The data for the rankings were collected and analyzed by a British consulting firm (H2 Gambling Capital). The firm calculated the amount bet on all types of activities (e.g., horse racing, poker, lotteries, etc.) in a given country and never recovered in a year divided by the adult population. Over 200 nations were included in the study.
