A LATE SUMMER OF DELIGHTFUL SPA RACING ON NBC

Television and social media are the best means to promote the sport of horse racing.

Commendably, NBC is providing racing aficonados and casual fans with an entertaining program of late summer races from the Saratoga Race Course, aka the SPA. The Saratoga races are a rewarding follow-up to the terrific job the network did in advertising and presenting the 2011 Triple Crown, as reflected in the ratings.

Saratoga’s biggest stakes races are broadcast on NBC and some of the important but lesser known stakes are on NBC’s Versus, which is an all-sports cable channel. The only problem with Versus is that it is a premium channel and this limits its audience reach.

Following is the NBC and Versus schedule for the remainder of the Saratoga season:

Whitney Handicap at Saratoga, 5:00-6:00 PM, Versus, August 7

Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap at Saratoga, 5:00-6:00 PM, Versus, August 13

Sword Dancer Handicap, Saratoga, 5:00-6:00 PM, Versus, August 20

Alabama Stakes at Saratoga, 5:00-6:00 PM, NBC, August 27

Travers Stakes at Saratoga, 5:00-6:00 PM, NBC September 3

Woodward Handicap at Saratoga, 5:00-6:00 PM, Versus

In addition to the Saratoga schedule, this Saturday (August 6) NBC will telecast harness racing’s biggest race in the United States, The Hambletonian, from 3:00-4:00 PM and originating from The Meadowlands in New Jersey.

It is duly noted that ABC did excellent work this past Sunday in telecasting the Haskell Invitational from Monmouth Park.
